Students' Butterflies in Space - 11/16/2009
And the Atlantis is carrying a little bit of the Southern Tier with it--Vestal Hills Elementary school was one of 20 classrooms chosen in the country to participate in a program called "Monarchs in Space."
The space shuttle Atlantis is carrying monarch caterpillars to the international space station.
Everyday students will be monitoring the caterpillars to see how anti-gravity has an effect on their development.
"It's real, it's happening right now, and we're involved and it has to do with space and space exploration, which is a very exciting topic, and I'm able to tie it in to our curriculm and it's going to be a lot of fun," said Mrs. Eva Michitti, a teacher at Vestal Hills Elementary School.
Mrs. Michiti's second grade class will be participating in the experiment for the next two weeks.
