Marine Corps Birthday - 11/10/2009

Tuesday's a great day to wish any current or former Marine a happy birthday.

Tuesday is the 234th anniversary of the U.S.Marine Corps' founding.

Local marines say they'll be celebrating this Sunday during the annual Marine Corps birthday ball in Albany.

For some, the traditions observed during the ball serve as a reminder of the accomplishment of belonging to this elite group of soldiers.

"Being able to celebrate something that not very many Americans have ever been able to accomplish, which is earning the title United States Marine, it just, it gives me that pride, that joy inside of me," said Staff Sgt. Bradley Harris, Marine Actively Canvassing Recruiter.

Marines say tens of thousands of their fellow soldiers will also be celebrating Tuesday night at Tun Tavern, the Philadelphia Bar the Corps was founded in.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion.
