Pharmacies Try To Help Tamiflu Shortage For Kids - 11/2/2009
Local pharmacies are doing their part to help the federal government battle the seasonal and swine flu.Because there's a short supply of the flu fighting medicine Tamiflu, the FDA is asking pharmacies nationwide to use their supply of the adult capsules to produce a liquid formula for children.
Locally, medicine shoppe pharmacies are already receiving requests for liquid Tamiflu.
One pharmacist says stores should have no problem making the liquid formula from the capsules, it's just a matter of getting Tamiflu in the first place.
"It's relatively easy. It's just a matter of emptying the capsules and making the appropriate dose for the child. The capsules are a stronger milligram, so you're just adjusting it to the strength requested by the doctor for the child," said Andrew Polak, Pharmacist, Medicine Shoppe.
But you can't just walk into a pharmacy and get the liquid Tamiflu, Polak says the medicine has to be prescribed by a doctor.
