BU takes down Maine in PK's; Advances to final - 11/1/2009
They were picked to finish fifth in the America East, they finished second. And with a win today over Maine the BU women's soccer team next week could finish as champions. But this afternoon they would have to fight for the right to move on.
Potentially the last home game of the season for the lady cats, and the fans showing some love to Stefani Knopick, but in the 58th minute it's the Black Bears who almost put one on the board, but the post makes the save.
Four minutes later, BU is charging, but Kerry Sullivan’s shot sails high, and we're still scoreless.
BU had plenty of opportunities this afternoon, like here, with two Knopick headers, but none of them would fall.
We go 110 minutes without a goal, so that mean's a penalty kick shootout.
It's 1-0 Maine, but Knopick buries the shot, and we're tied at one.
Laura Martel led the conference in goals this season, but today she would be denied. Senior keeper, Jen McEachron makes a huge save to keep it tied at one.
Then Emily Pape unties it, 2-1 BU. Which sets up the senior Nicole Montoya for the game defining moment; Montoya eliminates Maine, and sends the Bearcats into the conference final against Boston University next Saturday in Boston.
BU defeats Maine in pk's where Motoya and the rest of BU knew they had it.
