Local Police - 10/27/2009

On Wednesday law enforcement officers and local officials will take their oath to "serve" and protect to a new level, trading in their handcuffs and badges for menus and serving trays to assist servers at the Applebee’s across the Southern Tier!

Donations will benefit Special Olympics New York and the Law Enforcement Torch Run®. The Torch Run is part of a year-round, grassroots fundraising campaign by law enforcement agencies to benefit their local Special Olympics Program. New York State Police, New York State University Police at Binghamton, Owego PD and Ithaca PD will be participating in this unique fundraising event.

Law Enforcement will be on hand at three Applebee’s across the Southern Tier and will be greeting customers and helping out the wait staff. Law Enforcement will be in action at more than 35 Applebee’s locations statewide in hopes to raise thousands of dollars for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

 Gulf oil platform explodes, burning off La. coast
GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore petroleum platform exploded and was burning Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico about 80 miles off the Louisiana coast, west of the site where BP's undersea well spilled after a rig explosion. The Coast Guard says no one was killed in the blast, which was reported by a commercial helicopter flying over the area Thursday morning.
