Possible County H1N1 cases up - 10/26/2009
Two weeks ago the Broome County Health Department saw just a couple of cases that could be H1N1, now the number of Influenza type A has increased to more than 70. Influenza A is the flu virus strain that H1N1 falls under. Health officials say there could be many more undocumented cases."Numbers are not really useful, because it barely reflects just the iceberg of what we're seeing in our community," said Mari Yourdan, Communicable Disease Nurse for the Broome County Health Department.
The latest reports say H1N1 is affecting young people at an alarming rate. Yourdan wouldn't say which school, but admitted that a couple of school districts in the county have reported what could be H1N1.
However, this weekend Fox 40 News learned that a Union-Endicott High School students was hospitalized with what doctors are assuming is H1N1.
The boy's parents are blogging about his illness, but school officials are stopping short of saying that cases like this are H1N1.
"We have to wait until we get a confirmation from the Health Department before we can honestly say we have an outbreak of H1N1," said U-E Public Information Coordinator, Marilyn Blake.
Monday 309 students were out of school at U-E with flu like symptoms. That's up from 262 Friday and it reflects 23% of the high school's population.
Still, the Health Department says the H1N1 virus isn't severe for everyone. Peoplel who aren't considered high risk for getting the flu can just weather it out by drinking fluids and getting lots of rest.
