Lockheed Martin Awarded For Tactical Vehicle Design - 10/26/2009
A group of local Lockheed Martin employees that designed the vehicle that drew unanticipated press attention when it flipped over during a media day, have been awarded the highest honor the corporation gives each year.
Twenty nine Owego employees have received the 2009 Nova Award.
Officials say less than one-half percent of Lockheed's 140,000 employees worldwide get the recognition.
Included this year, the team that designed and built the joint light tactical vehicle prototype.
The vehicle turned over while being driven by a local television reporter.
Lockheed invited the media to operate the vehicle after it had successfully completed a number of qualifying tests.
Lockheed says speed was a factor in the mishap which involved an untrained driver --and that the incident does not reflect on the soundness of the vehicle's design.
