U-E and Forks Advance to STAC Finals - 10/20/2009

With the STAC girls soccer regular season in the books, the pretenders have been weeded out from the contenders. The final 4 competed tonight for the chance to claim a STAC crown. In the first semifinal, unbeaten U-E visited Owego Free Academy.

Amazingly, the Tigers didn't allow a single goal during the regular season. Would Owego snap the streak tonight? 15 minutes in, a good effort by Indians captain Maddy Tiddick, but it’s not gonna get it done. With the game still scoreless a couple minutes later, U-E's Liz Dwornik dunks the ball up field to Lindsay Lobevero. She pounds it off the goalie's pads and in. It's 1-0 Tigers. More Lobo 90 seconds later. She weaves through the Indians defenders like cones. No goal there, but no worries for U-E, they blank Owego 2-0 to advance to the STAC finals against Chenango Forks.

In the other STAC semi, undefeated Forks hosted Horseheads. The Blue Devils held a 1-0 lead midway through the first. Here's Mallory Illsley with a rocket right into the back of the net and the lead grows to 2. With 7 minutes till halftime, Illsley displays some brilliant passing. She threads the needle to Taylor Mazursky who crosses the ball into the corner for Forks’ third goal of the game. Early in the second half, how about some more Illsley, she dribbles inside the box and reaches for the top shelf. Beautiful. The Devils go up 4-0 and they roll to a 5-0 win over Horseheads. Forks will face U-E on Thursday in the STAC finals.
