Congressman Maurice Hinchey is saying not so fast, following today's release of an Environmental Impact Study on the effects of natural gas drilling.
New York's Department of Environmental Conservation conducted the study to determine how horizontal drilling should be done in the Marcellus Shale formation.
The new guidelines include on-site inspections, and pre-testing of air and soil.
Hinchey wants the comment period on the newly-released report to be extended from 60 to 90 days.
And, he wants federal regulations, plus, legislation that would force drilling companies to identify the chemicals in the solutions used to frack, or fracture shale.
Hinchey fears contamination of drinking water.
The report comes in the wake of three fracking fluid spills in Dimock Township, Pennsylvania.
