No 'I' in Team - 9/27/2009
Patrick Knaul has lived the majority of his life as a diabetic, being diagnosed at age four. But that hasn't stopped him from doing what he loves: playing soccer.
"I play anytime that I can, I love the friends that I have that I play with, it's really fun for me," Knaul said.
The support he gets from those teammates at Owego Free Academy carried over from the field, as they joined him Sunday at the 7th annual Juvenile Diabetes Walk at Highland Park.
"I really wanted to support Pat and the team, it's a team effort to defeat diabetes," said Knaul's teammate James Mead.
The walk was no problem for Knaul, who wears an insulin pump, but sometimes his disease catches up with him on the soccer field.
"Sometimes I do go low from the activity, and I get kind of sad that I don't get to play," Knaul said.
Although he sometimes gets fatigued, his team says that he's always giving it his all.
"He's always willing to put up 110%, he's always doing for the team, putting forth a lot of effort," Mead said.
And Knaul is grateful for the effort his teammates and hundreds of others put forth Sunday, helping him with the cause that's close to his heart.
"They've been great for me this year, they ask me how I've been doing and I'm really happy that they're here," Knaul said.
Despite the rain, the guys from OFA stuck together in hopes that one day Patrick won't be stuck on the sidelines.
