Speed May Have Caused JLTV Accident - 8/14/2009
Lockheed Martin says it looks like speed caused a JLTV driven by News 10 Now's Neil St. Clair to flip on the company's test track yesterday."Like any vehicle that any of us drive, speed can be a very direct contributor to maintaining vehicle control," said Thomas Greer, Lockheed Martin's communications director.
Lockheed says it should know exactly how fast the vehicle was going when it completes its incident report. It plans to look at structural damage and the JLTV's monitoring systems to learn more about the exact cause of the crash.
St. Clair, along with a News 10 photographer and Lockheed employee, were treated for cuts and scrapes after the crash. St. Clair, who appears to have been talking into the camera and turning while driving with one hand, during at least part of the ride, credits the vehicles' five-point harness with saving his own life and the others riding with him.
News 10 issued this statement:
"We were invited to test drive the vehicle. Unfortunately in doing so there was an accident. We're thankful there were no serious injuries."
Still unknown is whether the mishap might jeapardizee Lockheed's chances at securing a contract to supply 60,000 JLTVs to the US Army and Marines.
Lockheed says it's too early to assess the impact of wht happened on the project that just yesterday celebrated 50,000 miles of completed road tests.
"We've made very significant progress, we've made great progress on this program," said Greer. "You know, based on our review, we'll have a little bit better of an analysis."
The contract could be worth up to $75 billion and would double the workload for the company, which just last month had to lay off 600 people because of the canceled VH-71 presidential helicopter program.
Lockheed says it's too early to say when its incident review will wrap up.
