Protesters Push For Developmental Center To Stay Open
6/14/2014 (Updated 11:13:40 PM)Area residents are concerned that the potential closure of a local facility will result in harm to the people who use it--and they're determined to have their voices heard.
The Broome Developmental Center is expected to close by March of 2016--but Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo is working with Senator Tom Libous to pass the "Freeze Unsafe CLosures Now Act." Lupardo spoke with dozens of protesters in downtown Binghamton who also believe closing the center would result in harm to the developmentally disabled who receive care there.
"It's really important that no one leaves an institutional setting without a safe environment with a trained work force and all the services they need to get wrapped around them so that's very important. And also, we are not getting adequate answers ", said Donna Lupardo, Assemblywoman of the 123rd District
Lupardo and today's protesters hope Governor Andrew Cuomo will listen to their complaints, and pass the bill by the end of the legislative session.
