Officer Smith's Calling Hours
4/3/2014 (Updated 6:49:07 PM)Hundreds were filing into the Chase Funeral home in Port Dickinson Monday afternoon to honor slain Johnson City Police Officer David Smith...
Smith was shot to death Monday morning while responding to a disturbance at Southern Tier imaging on Harrison Street.
Police and fire personnel from throughout the area and beyond were among those who paid their respects.
Also attending was Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy.
Duffy and others expressed their appreciation for Smith's service.
"I'm a dad so I can't imagine an 11-year-old boy losing his father like that, it's terrible. And again I didn't know Officer Smith personally but he certainly served his community with distinction and there's just no reason for him having to die," said Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy.
"When a police officer dies in the line of duty or in any death it's very tragic. And we all come together and he's a fellow brother even though he was with a different department, we all feel as if we should pay our respects to the family, let them know that we're out there thinking about them," said Sergeant Glenn Rigerman with the New York State Police.
Officer Smith's funeral will be at Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial Church Friday at 11 am. The church is at the corner of Main and Baldwin Streets in Johnson City.
The funeral will be open to the public as space allows.
Parking will be at the former BAE Systems building in Westover, with shuttle service available.
Burial will be at Chenango Valley Cemetery following the funeral services.
The burial is restricted to family members and local law enforcement.
