Investigation into Shooting Death of JC Officer Continues

The investigation of fallen Johnson City police officer David Smith continued Tuesday.

Smith was killed when police say 43-year-old James Clark reached into Smith's car as he was answering a call about a disturbance at Southern Tier Imaging on Harrison Street in Johnson City.

Police say Clark got possession of Smith's gun and shot him twice. Police say they may never know why Clark did what he did.

"There's no indication of anything that we've found at this point that would make an individual, that is totally out of his character, to do something like this," said Johnson City Police Chief Joseph Zikuski.

According to investigators it appears Clark was on one medication, but that it was nothing that would cause him to act out of character like this. Police say that other than a DWI arrest 15 years ago, Clark had no criminal record.
