NYS Department of Health: Average American Drinks 40 Pounds of Sugar Yearly

32 percent of children in New York are overweight or obese, and the number for adults is 59 percent. However experts say it's not just because of what we eat but also what we drink.

Further, these experts say, despite their names "diet", "sports", and "energy" drinks are some of the biggest culprits. According to the New York State Department of Health, the average American drinks 40 pounds of sugar per year.

This sugar is found in beverages such as lemonade, fruit punch, sweetened coffee drinks, such as frappes and lattes, non-diet sodas, energy drinks, sweetened ice teas, and sport drinks, among others.

One 32 ounce soda alone contains 26 packets of sugar.

"My young boys would drink multiple bottles of sports drinks and it was advertised - I thought I was giving them vitamins and electrolytes that they needed. And they were small, little children putting in that much sugar," said Vicki Giarratano of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County.

"We find that in this 20-ounce serving of soda there's 19 teaspoons of sugar. When we get that visual it drives that point home much more than looking at the label and looking at grams," said Judi Salton of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County.

According to a nutrition educator with the Cornell Cooperative Extension a problem with diet sodas is that they contain artificial sweeteners, which can spur your body to crave other sweet foods which could could be high in calories.
