Lady Bearcats season ends in quarters

ALBANY, N.Y.  Shereesha Richards and Imani Tate each scored 18 points, leading top-seeded Albany (26-4) to a 77-59 win over Binghamton (5-25) in an America East quarterfinal game on Friday evening at SEFCU Arena.

The Bearcats held their own against the two-time defending champions, staying within striking distance for much of the second half.  Junior forward Sherae Swinson finished with a game-high 21 points while sophomore forward Morgan Murphy added 13 points and seven rebounds.

I am very proud of the way our team played tonight, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We stayed with Albany for most of the game but they are the top team in the conference for a reason and congratulations to them on the win.

Binghamton jumped out to a 7-4 lead 3:48 into the game. Swinson had four points during that stretch.

From there, however, the Great Danes controlled the remainder of the first half, going up 47-27 at the break. Albany had five players score at least seven points during the first 20 minutes.

In the first 2:06 of the second half, Binghamton went on an 8-0 run, trimming the deficit to 47-35. Senior guard Stephanie Jensen sank a pair of three-point field goals during that span.

The Bearcats played even with Albany for the ensuing 12 minutes. They then pulled to within 62-52 on a pair of free throws by senior guard Vaneeshia Paulk with 6:09 left in regulation.

Albany finally put the game out of reach with a 15-5 run to go up 75-55 with 1:15 remaining. Sarah Royals, who finished with 12 points, had five points during that span.

The Great Danes had a 50-18 advantage in point in the paint and outscored the Bearcats bench 30-5.

NOTES: Swinsons 21 points in the highest turned in by a Binghamton player in an America East Tournament game since Orla OReilly also had 21 points against Hartford on March 2, 2012.
