New Fracking Coalition Looks for Strength in Numbers

Pro-fracking groups are hoping there is strength in numbers as they have formed a new coalition to try to get the state to lift its moratorium on the drilling practice.

The group is called Southern Tier Residents for Economic Independence.

It includes labor unions, the Broome County Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau, as well as the Joint Landowners Coalition of New York.

Group members feel the coalition can be a strong voice in Albany. Anti-fracking activists feel it's more of the same.

"This is about industry using a different mouthpiece to regurgitate the same information and spread the same misinformation that they've been spreading for years now," said Isaac Silberman-Gorn of Citizen Action.

"The difference with this is the diversity with it, the amount of different people coming in and wanting to get involved. We're getting so many phone calls from businesses and organizations that want to join this, more than ever before," said Dan Fitzsimmons, President of the Joint Landowners Coalition of Southern Tier.

The Southern Tier Residents for Economic Independence says it is not affiliated with the natural gas industry or outside groups.
