New Training Looks to Bolster Teacher Leadership

There is a lot of stopping and starting in Scott Symons' class at Windsor High School.

When asking a question Symons often has his students pause to think or talk to each other to come up with the answer. It keeps all students engaged and lets him know which students are understanding the material.

"We don't put a kid on the spot anymore and say, 'Scott, what's the answer?' and everybody else shuts down. Now we're letting kids think, talk, and make sure they understand the right answers so then they can give it back in class and it makes the kid feel successful too," said Symons.

Symons is one of eight teachers from the Windsor District and 48 overall taking part in the Strengthening Teacher & Leader Effectiveness training through BOCES. Teachers from Chenango Valley, Harpursville, Johnson City, Owego-Apalachin, and Windsor are taking part in the training, made possible by an $875,000 grant.

"What you're going to see is stronger teaching, kids are going to be engaged. The questioning is going to get better," said Barb Phillips, Race to the Top Network Team Coordinator for Broome-Tioga BOCES.

There are three levels to the training. The first focuses on effective teacher training. The second does the same with more emphasis on data.

"The data honestly shows where the kids' weaknesses are and let the kids know these are their weaknesses, this is what they have to work on, it's going to move the kids more toward mastery on some exams," said Symons.

The third level focuses on academic coaching training. Teachers and administrators in Windsor say the training will help them elevate their teaching style.

"Once that data is applied to the classroom I think you're going to see test scores go up and student achievement go up," said WIndsor High School Principal Jeffrey Salasny.
