BU splits second straight day at USF Tourney

Senior pitcher Demi Laney and freshman pitcher Annika Wiesinger combined for a three-hit shutout, as Binghamton gained a split on the second day of the South Florida Tournament. The Bearcats beat Wright State (0-4) 9-0 in the opener but lost 15-2 to Illinois (8-0) in the second game.
One day after tossing a complete-game shutout against the host Bulls, Laney scattered three hits and struck out a pair of batters in five innings against Wright State. Wiesinger, meanwhile, retired all six batters she faced and punctuated the game with a strikeout.
Offensively against the Raiders, freshman outfielder Bridget Hunt went 2-for-5, homered and scored twice. Sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh also went 2-for-5 with two runs and drove in a pair of runs.
Hunt highlighted a three-run top of the first inning with a solo homer over the right field fence. It was her first career home run.
Binghamton tacked on another two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Caytlin Friis had a RBI single and senior second baseman Jessica Bump was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Harbaugh highlighted a four-run seventh inning with a two-run single.
Laney won her second straight decision while Krystian DeWitt was tagged with the loss and fell to 0-2.
Freshman outfielder Gabby Bracchi finished the first game 2-for-4 as did sophomore first baseman Lisa Cadogan.
In the second game, Remeny Perez went 4-for-4 with a home run and RBI. She keyed an Illini attack that belted out 17 hits.
The tone was set in the top of the first inning when Allie Bauch and Perez led off the game with back-to-back home runs. Ruby Rivera made it 3-0 with a RBI double in the top of the second inning.
Binghamton pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Harbaugh singled home the first run and Cadogan followed with a RBI double.
Perez keyed a three-run fourth inning with a RBI double, giving the Illini a 6-2 lead. She added an RBI single one inning later as Illinois tacked on nine more runs.
Brandi Needham got the win, raising her record to 4-0. Laney fell to 2-1 with the loss.
Cadogan went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
Binghamton wraps up play at the USF Tournament with a 9 a.m. game against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
