Bearcats split Opening Day

TAMPA, Fla.  Senior pitcher Demi Laney tossed a complete-game shutout, highlighting Binghamtons performance in the first day of the South Florida Softball Tournament. The Bearcats (1-1) beat the host Bulls (2-3) 1-0 but lost to top-ranked Tennessee (6-0) 10-0 in five innings.

South Florida is currently the first team receiving votes in the NFCA Top 25 Poll. Tennessee, meanwhile, is the top-ranked team.

Against the Bulls, Laney (1-0) scattered seven hits and struck out four batters en route to the eighth complete-game shutout of her career.

Senior pinch runner Lisa Cutrona scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. She was on third base when a routine throw to keep her from scoring got by the third baseman. It was the only error of the game.

South Florida pitchers Erica Nunn and Sara Nevins combined to strike out 15 batters and did not allow an earned run. Nunn, however, was tagged with the loss, dropping her record to 1-1.

Against the Vols, however, the Bearcats were two-hit by Erin Gabriel (1-0). She also struck out 11 batters and issued only one walk.

Offensively, Tennessee was led by infielder Taylor Koenig, who went 2-for-2 with a triple, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Binghamton plays Wright State at 11:15 a.m. and Illinois at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday as play continues at the South Florida Tournament.

NOTE: The win over South Florida also marked the 100th win in head coach Michelle Burrells career at Binghamton. The fifth-year head coach, who is now 100-89, is the second coach in program history to reach the milestone. Holly Brown won 225 games from 1996-2006 ... the game against Tennessee marked just the second time that a Binghamton program has faced the No. 1 NCAA Division 1 team in the nation. The Bearcat mens soccer team faced then top-ranked Maryland in 2006.
