Drill Rig Fire at New Owego-Apalachin School Site

(Source: Fox 40 Staff)

A drilling rig at the site of Owego-Apalachin's new elementary school hit a natural gas pocket this afternoon, causing a fire just before two o'clock.

According to a spokesperson for the Owego-Apalachin School District the drilling rig was working on the geothermal system for the new elementary school.

"The rig can't be pulled off the drill hole because it's connected to all 300 feet of drill pipe. What we've done is set up a water supply, and we have remote deluge guns  cooling the rig. But we're leaving the fire burn until the gas is exhausted," said Incident Commander with the Owego Fire Department Steve Solomon.

All after school activities, except for a high school boys playoff basketball game, were cancelled because of the fire.
