Is CrossFit Safe?

"Running, swimming, jumping on boxes, swinging on bars," said Leslie Heywood.
Co-owner of Southern Tier CrossFit Leslie Heywood says she started doing the hour long CrossFit classes after she was injured running marathons.
"I found CrossFit as a way of sort of healing myself and way to do something that wasn't repetitive," said Heywood.
But now CrossFit injuries have become the center of national attention after a coach severed his spine during a competition.
It's also received an unofficial mascot "Uncle Rhabdo," Rhabdo short for the potential fatal condition rhabdomylosis.
"When the muscle is broke down and the content of that muscle are released into the bloodstream, some of those can be harmful to the kidney and eventually cause renal failure," said Denise Kittle, physical therapist at Lourdes.
The condition can be brought on by extreme exercise. Kittle says its important to be aware of the symptoms, like muscle soreness swelling and dark colored urine, but says rhabdomylosis is extremely rare.
Heywood fears its giving a good workout a bad rep.
"We never scale any one beyond what they are capable of," said Heywood.
With modifications and coach supervision, Heywood says its a safe way to get fit.
Doctors say when it comes to any type of exercise its important to listen to your body and seek treatment if you feel pain.
"Watch your form, stay hydrated. If your doing all of these things, you probably wont end up with this type of condition," said Kittle.
