Binghamton Unemployment Rate Down

Binghamton's unemployment rate is down but the news is not all good for local workers.
The jobless rate in December was 6.9 percent in Binghamton compared to 8.8 percent in December of 2012. But, analysts believe much of the drop has to do with jobless people becoming disengaged and no longer looking for work. The total number of jobs in Binghamton dropped by 400 from December of 2012 to December of 2013.

"A stable labor force or a growth in labor force, that's the recovery. We're seeing that nationally and we're seeing it in the better markets but we're just not seeing it really locally," said Christian Harris, analyst for the New York State Department of Labor.

New York's private-sector job count increased by almost 110,000 jobs from December of 2012 to December of 2013. But, according to Harris, much of that growth has been downstate.
