New York Weather Service On Recent String of Cold Temperatures
1/28/2014 (Updated 7:31:28 PM)Well, here's some breaking news. It's cold outside. But how cold has it been?
Somewhat surprisingly this month won't go down as one of the five coldest Januaries on record.
But, we have already tied the record of most days below zero in January at nine.
And with a couple of cold nights left we may tie or break the all-time monthly record of ten set in February of 1979.
So why isn't it one of the coldest Januaries? We've actually had a few days in the 40s and 50s and some wild temperature swings.
"Toward the beginning of the month (we had) the largest 24-hour temperature change here at the airport, 49 degrees. It started out at 49 degrees at midnight and then 24 hours later it was zero. So we've seen some crazy swings in the weather," said Dave Nicosia of the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
Nicosia points out we could challenge for the most days below zero in a season. That record is 15 days.
