Federal Funds for Flood Mitigation Coming to Village of Owego
1/27/2014 (Updated 1/28/2014 6:33:59 PM)Federal funds for flood mitigation have made their way to the Village of Owego.
Village Mayor Kevin Millar says funding has been approved for 27 homes in the 100 year flood plane to be elevated.
Senator Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced today the village will receive a $1.2 million FEMA grant. Millar says the village has applied for $20 million in federal funds for hazard mitigation following the 2011 flood and this is the first round to be approved. He says there is still some rebuilding to do, but they are turning their focus to prevention:
"We are taking many steps into mitigation. Some is individual homes, some mitigation is business. Hopefully mitigation is going to do something about the hydrolledging of the streams and rivers," said Village of Owego Mayor Kevin Millar.
Millar says there is no time line for the construction on the 27 homes. He says the grant will help decrease the chances of residential flooding and reduce the cost of the home owners flood insurance premiums.
