Jobless New Yorkers May Lose Benefit Payments

More than a third of a million jobless New Yorkers will be affected if the federal government doesn't extend unemployment benefits at the end of this month.
The Labor Department says the resulting decline in benefit payments will force millions of households to reduce consumption, causing more weakness in the economy.

The federal government says the consumer spending, which the benefits have made possible, have saved more than 19 thousand jobs in New York.

More than 1.7 million New Yorkers have receiving federal unemployment benefits.
