Lady Bearcats fall to Big Red

ITHACA, N.Y.  Allyson DiMango netted a game-high 17 points, leading Cornell (5-3) to a 63-55 win over Binghamton (1-6) in a non-conference womens basketball game on Wednesday night at Newman Arena. The loss was the second straight setback for the Bearcats.

After taking care of the basketball this past weekend at the New Mexico Tournament, the Bearcats committed a season-high 24 turnovers against Cornell. The Big Red, meanwhile, scored 27 of its points off of Bearcat miscues.

Give Cornell credit because their defense was good but we just turned the ball over way too much tonight, head coach Nicole Scholl said. It wasnt one or two particular players but collectively, we made way too many mistakes.

The Big Red broke open the game with an 8-0 run in a span of 1:49 to go up 14-9 with 14:18 left in the first half. Shelby Lyman had four points during that stretch.

Binghamton got to within 16-13 but Cornell went on a 10-2 run to take a commanding 26-15 lead with 8:55 left in the first half. The Big Red drained a pair of three-point field goals in the process. The Bearcats then closed to within 33-29 at the half, ending the period on an 8-2 run over the final 6:34.

Binghamton went scoreless in the opening eight minutes of the second half as the Big Red padded their lead to 40-29. From there, both teams struggled from the field for much of the second half.

A three-point field goal by senior guard Stephanie Jensen pulled the Bearcats to within 50-43 with 3:41 left in regulation. Cornell, however, responded with an 8-2 run in the next two minutes to go up 58-45.

Jensen led the Bearcats with a career-high 17 points (which tied DiMango for the game-high) while sophomore forward Morgan Murphy added 10 points. Sophomore guard Kandace Newry, meanwhile, grabbed a game-high and career-best 11 rebounds.
Nia Marshall finished with 14 points for Cornell while Lyman chipped in 10 points.

Binghamton returns home to face St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Jensens previous career high of 15 points came against Maine on Jan. 20, 2013  Newry has now reached double figures in rebounding in two of the past three games.
