Bearcats fall to undefeated Razorbacks
11/30/2013 (Updated 10:55:48 PM)ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Unbeaten Arkansas (8-0) showed why it is one of the top defensive teams in the country, defeating Binghamton (1-5) 72-23 in the championship game of the New Mexico Tournament on Saturday evening at the Pit. The Bearcats settle for a second-place finish at the four-team event.
Heading into the weekend, the Razorbacks ranked second in scoring defense, surrendering just 44.0 points per contest. In the two games this weekend, however, Arkansas allowed only 30.0 points per game.
Following their dramatic win over the host Lobos Friday night, the Bearcats were unable to solve the Razorback defense. They fell behind 35-9 at the half, shooting just 3-for-22 (14 percent) during that stretch. Binghamton finished the game shooting 8-for-46 (17 percent).
This weekend was good experience for us, especially playing two games on back-to-back nights, head coach Nicole Scholl said. The win over New Mexico was great but tonight (against Arkansas) was a bit of a letdown with our intensity. Arkansas is a very good team but we were hoping for a carryover from last night.
Arkansas placed three players in double figures, led by Jhasmin Bowen with 15 points. McKenzie Adams added 12 points and Jessica Jackson finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Junior guard Gintare Surdokatie led Binghamton with a career-high eight points.
Binghamton returns to the East Coast and will head to Cornell on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
Looking ahead, we can take a lot from this weekend, Scholl said. We grew as a team last night in our win and today, we had some of our younger players come off the bench and play significant minutes for us. Overall, this weekend was a positive for us.
