Poll Numbers Give Support to Anti-Frackers

A pair of state polls show a plurality of New Yorkers oppose fracking...

A Marist poll reports 47% of adults in New York oppose the drilling technique as opposed to 37% who support it. A Quinnipiac poll released today puts those numbers at 44% in favor of fracking and 46% against.

While drilling supporters say those numbers don't tell the whole story,
anti-fracking activists see these numbers as a sign of hope:

"More and more New Yorkers are seeing through the industry's PR campaign and past the 30-second ads. We anticipate these numbers to grow despite every tactic that industry can throw at us," said Isaac Silberman-Gorn of Citizen Action.

The Marist poll shows that upstate, there is even stronger opposition to fracking, but only by an additional percentage point.

In response Dan Fitzimmons, the president of the Joint Landowners Coalition of New York, said that a Robert Morris poll shows 56% of Americans support fracking. He says Governor Cuomo's failure to lead on the issue has caused the divide in the state.
