Cracking Down on DWI This Holiday Season

With many people traveling and celebrating on this long holiday weekend, local officials want to remind everyone to be safe while driving.

Law enforcement across Broome County will have special DUI patrols on the road, as well as undisclosed checkpoints set up across the area.

Those at the Broome County Sheriff's office say they encourage the public to enjoy the community, but safely.

"The most important thing is that everybody has a plan. It's important to either use public transportation, carpool, have a designated driver. What shouldn't be part of your plan is getting behind the wheel when you've been drinking," said Captain Fred Ashkar of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

According to officials, there were nearly 600 deaths during the Thanksgiving Day weekend last year across the country. Almost half of those were attributed to alcohol.
