Schumer Wants Tougher Penalties for Cellphone Spam
11/25/2013 (Updated 10:50:13 PM)Can you hear me now? Cut out the spam calls on cellphones, or face big fines and even jail time:
That's what New York Senator Charles Schumer wants telemarketers who violate federal "do not call" rules to hear.
Schumer says existing penalties for robocalls are minor, encouraging companies to launch millions of pre-recorded robo-calls at the click of a button.
Schumer wants fines increased to $20,000 dollars for each violation, and even jail time for the most egregious repeat offenders.
On Monday, he unveiled details of the proposed legislation he plans to introduce in the Senate.
