Binghamton University's Black Student Union Celebrates 45 Years

One of Binghamton University's oldest and largest student groups is celebrating a milestone.

The Black Student Union marked their 45th anniversary by inviting students and alumni to a celebration at the Holiday Inn. Not only does the organization strive to unite and educate students on campus, they also reach out to underprivileged youth in Binghamton by tutoring them and teaching them about black history. Members say being part of the union is a lot of work but that it's worth it.

"But it's also very rewarding seeing the outcomes of a lot of the things that we do," said Rayan Reid, public relations chair.

May of this year one of the Union's members was verbally attacked with racial slurs. The organization responded by holding a forum to confront racism. Members say their proud to have made those accomplishments and hope they can continue to  promote change in the community.
