How to Stay Safe While Surfing the Web

With more of our lives moving online, how safe are you from cyber threats?

The State of New York is offering some tips to stay safe, such as securing your online transactions, using strong passwords, and to not email sensitive data.

According to local police, the key to safety could be common sense.

You should never believe you've won an online lottery or been selected for an unsolicited job.

"All that is is another scam for you to send them money as a pre-application free or they'll send you checks and that's all they want you to do is try to cash them for them. You're just incriminating yourself. You're cashing a fraudulent check," said Det. James Broderick of the Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Broderick adds that legitimate businesses will rarely ask you for credit card or social security numbers, instead sending you to a secure website or live person to confirm your identity.

He also stresses parents put a face to the name of people their kids may be communicating with on-line.
