A Piece of Greater Binghamton Going to the Olympics

This might not look like much now, but in just a few days this four-man bobsled will be primed, painted, and ready for the Australian National Bobsled team to take it to Lake Placid for training next week.

"This has been a riot. It's only been here three days and we are all wicked enthused that we were given the opportunity to paint this thing," said Broome-Tioga BOCES Auto Body Instructor Chad Zajdel.

"It's pretty cool that it's actually going to be in the Olympics and other people are going to see your work," said Broome-Tioga BOCES Auto Body student Henery Grannis.

Endwell native and Johnson City resident Randy Will, who rode for the U-S Bobsled Team in 1988, 1992, and 1994 and coached it in 2002, built it in his garage after becoming the Australian National Team coach last year.

"The Australians called up one day and said, 'We've been looking for you. We haven't seen or heard from you in ages. Where have you been?' I said, 'Well, I'm living down in Charlotte of all places.' I stayed away from the ice and snow," said Will.

The sled will be used in World Cup competition until January when the sled will return to BOCES for final repair and body work.

"The coach was so laid back when he dropped it off. It was like we're painting somebody's skateboard. To me this is a pretty important deal. I would think that hundreths of seconds matter," said Zajdel.

"We don't want to mess it up for them. It puts a bunch of pressure on you. It's like, 'woah,'" said Grannis.

"We're competing against guys now who (have sleds) built by BMW. So it's a little guy in a garage or a big BMW corporation. So we'll see who's got it," said Will.

A little guy in a garage and some kids at BOCES, too.

"That's right, kids at BOCES. So God bless them, this is a great thing," said Will.
