BHS Student to Compete in World Food Prize

A Binghamton High School student has been chosen to represent New York State at the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute.

Nosa Akol, a junior at BHS, and a Citizen U leader, spent her summer writing an essay on South Sudan.

She presented the essay at Cornell University last weekend against twenty other students, and was one of the five chosen to advance.

Akol was born in South Sedan, and was surprised by what she learned about her country.

"I am a feminist. I do believe in comparing women. So actually to find out how women are being treated that kind of got me really upset. So that pushed me to search into it and try to do something about it," said Akol.

Akol's essay is called "Achieving Human Rights Through Education."

She will present the essay again at the World Food Prize Institute in Des Moines, Iowa.
