Facebook Helps Broome County Sheriff's Department

Facebook can help you reconnect with friends but it has also proven to help keep the streets of Binghamton safe.

The Broome County Sheriff's Department has created a page that now has more than 3,400 followers.

Wednesday members of the sheriff's office used the social media outlet to post pictures of a suspect wanted for petit larceny and within half an hour the tips started pouring in.

They have since arrested 54-year-old David Pickett of Johnson City.

"Law enforcement is successful when you partner with the community. I think that these new pieces of technology, Facebook these mobile applications are allowing law enforcement and the community to do just that," said Captain Frederick Akshar with the Broome County Sheriff's Department.

Captain Akshar also notes that they use Facebook as a means of getting important information out to the public such as road closures, impending storms, and alerts.
