Avoiding the Freshman 15

Most first-year college students seem to have one thing in common, the threat of adding the dreaded freshman 15.

Although officials say the average freshman weight gain is more like 7-10 pounds, there are plenty of things students can do to stay healthy, including staying active and being mindful of when and what they eat. Even with the abundance of food available at dining halls, there are plenty of healthy options available.

"So there's always going to be a salad bar, there's always going to be fruit available, there's always going to be a vegetarian option, there's always going to be a heart-healthy option and sometimes they take a little more thought and a little more planning," said Jennifer Wegmann of the BU Health and Wellness Studies Department.

"Practice mindful eating so making sure that you're paying attention to your hunger and satiety cues and that you're not eating out of boredom or stress or maybe homesickness," said Lourdes registered Dietitian Ana Yaman.

Yaman says students should eat scheduled healthy meals and snacks such as fruits and vegetables every 3-4 hours.
