Calvin Coolidge Elementary Asbestos Update

Following the recent discovery of asbestos at Calvin Coolidge Elementary,  it's still up in the air as to where its students will begin their new year.

The school district held a closed meeting Monday with faculty and staff to discuss possible relocation while the clean up continues.

Abatement began Saturday morning and there is no timetable for it's completion meaning the school might  be closed at the start of the school year.

"We are preparing that we won't be able to open on September 4th.  So we are starting to look at different relocation plans both within the district and alternate sites as options," said Karry Mullins, Assistant Superintendent, BCSD.

"I think it will be a smooth transition, we have excellent teachers, very supportive staff, and we're working hard to work together," said Valerie Degennaro, 4th and 5th Grade Special Education Teacher at Coolidge.

Tuesday, the board of education and district officials meet.

On Thursday school officials will meet with parents at the Columbus School on Hawley Street at 6:00pm.
