ENDICOTT -- To call Friday's first round of the Dick's Sporting Goods Open perfect, would be an understatement. The course was beautiful, the weather was even better, and the fans came out in force to see great golf, and cap the night off with Tim McGraw on the 18th green.
While the anticipation of the concert had the crowd's almost too excited, the golfer's were equally as electric.
It took until the final hole for the final grouping to settle on a leader. Kenny Perry came into 18 tied for a share of the lead at -6 before birdieing to take the outright lead.
Before that, it looked like the day would be settled by the early pairings. Fuzzy Zoeller jumped off to an early lead by sinking birdie's on his first three holes, but then bogeyed 5 and finished at 3-under.
But, higher up the leaderboard, all tied at -6, Bart and Brad Bryant and Jeff Freeman. All three teed off before 11:00 AM.
As for the heavy hitters in the later groups, reigning champion Willie Wood had a day to forget. After beginning his day with a birdie, he proceeded to bogey six holes and add a double bogey, despite mixing in two more birdies to finish towards the bottom at +5.
Previous champions John Huston (2011) and Loren Roberts (2010) each with respectable rounds of their own. Both ended the day at -2, each with only one hole over par. For Huston, it was a double bogey on the notorious 15th hole, but that was offset by four birdies. Roberts saw his score drop early after finding the water on 2, but made up for it birdieing three holes from that point on.
Fan favorite and Horseheads native, Joey Sindelar was looking slim and trim after coming back from injury and dropping a lot of weight. He says his swing has also changed a lot, but he was happy to be back out on the course. He headed into the locker room also at 2-under, tied for 20th.
The two other golfers that, at one point, called New York State home, had varying degrees of success. Utica native and Oswego State Alum Wayne Levi had a few more squares than circles on his scorecard to finish alone in 74th at +4. But, Jeff Sluman, out of Rochester, joined the mass of people at -2 thanks to birdies on 5, 10, and 12, with just one bogey on 13 to drop a stroke.
With all of the great golf, great crowds, and of the fantastic weather, one can only expect Saturday's Second Round to be equally as amazing.
