Dick's Open to crown 1000th Champions Tour winner

ENDICOTT -- There is something extra special about the 2013 Dick's Sporting Goods Open.

"History," said Tournament Director John Karedes.

That's what's on the line at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open on Sunday.

"There is a story to be told on the Champions Tour about this being the thousandth," adds pro Hale Irwin.

The Champions Tour will crown winner number 1000, which is especially meaningful for Hale Irwin.

Irwin explains, "If that next victory were to be this week, there'd be no one happier than me. Believe me."

Irwin won number 500, but that was 17 years ago when he was 51 years old. Are the odds stacked against him now because of age?

According to Karedes, "The closer you are to 50, your better chances are to win. But you never know. Look at what Hale Irwin has done just throughout his career, so who knows. He could be in the hunt. He could be 500 and 1000."

On Thursday, Irwin praised Kenny Perrt. That said, he still recognizes that this year's competitors have something good cooking.

Irwin says, "Put the ingredients together and you have a great championship. Look at the field. I think it's a wonderful field."

A field with the chance to start the tradition for the next thousand.

"It's the beginning of something great here as the Champions Tour continues to get stronger and stronger each and every year," Karedes explains.

Don January, who won the Champions Tour's first event, will be on hand for the trophy presentation Sunday.
