Schumer Supports Bill To Fight Tick-Borne Illnesses

After two deadly tick-borne illnesses have been found in New York,
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is supporting a bill that aims to increase education on tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease the Powassan virus and Borelia Miyamotoi.

Schumer is calling on the CDC to use its resources to study, prevent and treat the emerging Powassan virus threat. A case of the Powassan virus was found in Saratoga County and has been found in ticks in the Hudson Valley.  It causes symptoms similar to Lyme disease and there is currently no treatment.  The disease has killed 30 percent of those affected statewide since 2004.

The Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education and Research Act would expand research to help medical professionals better diagnosis the diseases and treat them.
