Discussions Continue Over Residency Requirements

What if you had an incentive to live in the city in order to work for the city? What if that incentive was an extra vacation day?

At Monday's city council work session, members continued to discuss whether to require future city employees to live within the city boundaries and what incentives the city could provide. The city council would like to make new hires have an 18 month probationary period where they are required to live in Binghamton.

The council is also looking into wavier requirements for those who wish to move out of the area after that probationary period. 

"Which City Council really to this point hasn't been involved in and we feel important that if a various employee of the city is to receive a wavier, the City Council should be involved in the process with the knowledge of why that person has received a wavier not to live in the city," said Bill Berg, representative of the 7th district.

The Council will continue to discuss residency requirements at a meeting on August 21st. Berg says Binghamton's population was once close to seventy thousands residents.  Now it's down to forty-eight thousand residents.
