Hundreds of Jobs Would Be Affected By Developmental Center Closing

lt looks like almost 700 hundred jobs would be affected in some way by the state's plan to close the Broome Developmental Center over the next three years:
The center, on Glenwood Road in Binghamton, serves fewer than 200 clients.

Although the state claims there will be no lay-offs because of re-assignments, not everyone is convinced.

Union officials are reportedly expressing skepticism, and State Senator Tom Libous is apparently not  happy about it.

The planned closing is the latest move in the state's effort to downsize, or entirely shut-down institutions in order to integrate clients into normal community settings.

Just a few weeks ago, the state announced a plan to consolidate 24 psychiatric hospitals into 15 regional centers.  T

That would involve elimination of in-patient services at the Greater Binghamton Health Center.
