Keep Cool For Less
7/16/2013 (Updated 11:19:22 PM)Can you keep cool in this weather without exceeding your energy budget?
NYSEG says you can save on air conditioning costs simply by keeping your drapes drawn and blinds down.
Also, try not to use heat-generating appliances such as clothes dryers, and use microwaves instead of stoves to heat your food.
"Turn off the lights when you don't need them. Lights generally generate heat, even florescent bulbs generate a little bit of heat. You certainly don't need any extra heat in your home this time of year, so turn off those lights, turn off televisions [which] also generate heat, turn off computers when you're not using them," said Clay Ellis, spokesperson.
Officials also suggest using fans instead of AC units whenever possible, and make sure you turn your air conditioning off when you leave the house.
