Train Derailed in Whitney Point

They're still cleaning up the mess at the spot where six freight cars  derailed and went into the river south of Whitney Point around 6:15 Tuesday morning.

A viewer sent us this photo of the scene.  The derailment is attributed to erosion caused by heavy rains.  The cars which were heading north from Binghamton to Syracuse, carried construction debris.

A spokesperson for the Susquehanna and Western railway told us that as far as she was aware,  none of the material carried in the cars spilled into the water, and nothing was contaminated.

She says authorities, including the DEC were called to the scene.

The line is expected to re-open early next week.
