River Rescue Near South Washington Street Bridge

a woman is lucky to be alive  thanks to some fortunate timing, and the efforts of the Binghamton Fire Department.

Just before 6PM Tuesday, a call came in reporting a body in the river near the Park Diner.

As we learned on the scene -- Binghamton firemen happened to be checking river levels on the north bank when they saw a woman walk towards the river on the south side -- lose her footing and fall into the river.

Crews sped across to the other side and found her clinging to a cement barrier.

"...happened to be at the dam at the time she went in , which I can't imagine what the chances are of that happening , but I'm glad it worked out that way and we were able to be there..." said Lt.Dan Vail of the Binghamton Fire Department.

"...any report like that we bring all our resources over here.  Certainly with the weather conditions and the height of the river and gave us even more concern."  said Binghamton's fire chief Daniel
Thomas.

The woman who was rescued clung to a cement barrier until crews rescued her.  She walked away from the scene with assistance and left with police for questioning
