Senator Schumer Calling for Investigation into Exploding Cell Phone Batteries
6/23/2013 (Updated 11:26:05 PM)NEW YORK -- US Senator Schumer is warning the public about a growing problem: poorly-made cell phone batteries that can explode and cause injuries.
Senator Schumer says over the past two years, there have been over 60 reported incidents of phone batteries smoking, catching fire, or exploding. The problematic batteries are reportedly knockoffs and counterfeit models, usually made in china.
Senator Schumer is calling on the Consumer Product Safety Commission to investigate the incidents. The CPSC could issue public safety warnings or ban the products from being imported.
