NY Bill Increases Preschool Special Education Oversight

ALBANY -- There has been great concern over rising costs of education in New York.

And now state legislature has voted to increase oversight of programs for preschoolers with disabilities.  Over the next five years, the state comptroller will audit all of the special education providers in New York at least once a year.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has commended the legislature for passing the bill.  DiNapoli says he has identified extensive fraud and improper use of funds in a recent series of audits, and as a result, it has cost taxpayers millions of dollars while depriving children of needed help.  In total, there are over 300 special education programs in New York.
