Pair of BU Distance Running Recruits Sweep New York State Titles

VESTAL, N.Y.  A pair of incoming distance runners continue to make history in their final high school outdoor track campaigns.
Eric Holt, who is a senior at Carmel High School, won the boys mile at the New York State Meet this past weekend. Eileen OHara, who runs for Webster-Thomas High School, captured the girls 1,500 at the same meet. The New York State Outdoor Track Meet encompasses all Class levels.

We are very excited for Eric and Eileen, Binghamton head cross country and assistant track coach Annette Acuff said. What a great accomplishment for each of them. Its so exciting to have them as Bearcats next year.

Holt clocked a winning time of 4:07.00, which was the ninth-fastest high school time in New York State history. It is also currently ranked No. 16 in terms of the fastest high school performances in the nation this season. While he did not run the 3,200 at the New York State meet, Holts top time of 9:00.20 is ranked No. 37 in the nation this season.

OHara, meanwhile, clocked a time of 4:28.94, which is currently the tenth-fastest girls time in the nation this season. Earlier in the season, OHara clocked a time of 9:42.89 in the 3,000 at the Runnin Cadet Classic, which is currently the ninth-fastest time in the nation.

Both Holt and OHara will compete at the New Balance National Meet at North Carolina A&T June 14-16. Holt is entered in the boys 3,200 while OHara is slated to run in the girls 1,600 and 3,200.

When they arrive at Binghamton this fall, both Holt and OHara will join the cross country and track programs. Last fall, Holt placed third overall at the Nike Cross Country National New York Regional Meet. He was also third at the New York State Class A Championships. OHara, meanwhile, was 23rd at the Nike Cross Country National New York Regional Meet in 2012.

Binghamton has now recruited seven New York State distance event champions during its Division I era. At the 2011 NYS Indoor Meet, current sophomores Jesse Garn and Josh Miller won the boys 1,000 and 600 respectively. Jeff Martinez won the 3,200 at the 2009 NYS Outdoor Championships, Erik van Ingen won the 800 at the 2007 outdoor meet and Michael Schieck was first in the 1,000 at the 2008 indoor championships.
