Golf Tournaments Honor Fallen Firefighters, Local Charities

BROOME COUNTY -- Over 200 took out their golf clubs Saturday to honor firemen who have died in the line of duty.

It was the First Annual Owego Fallen Firefighters Memorial Golf Tournament, held at the Links at Hiawatha.  Money raised from the event will go towards a $2000 scholarship for a graduating Owego Free Academy senior pursuing education in a first responder field.  The rest of the money will go to support the operating costs for the owego fire department training facility.  The tournament is expected to generate at least $10,000 dollars in profit.

"I think it's important.  We're having an enjoyable day today, but it's time not to forget what the firefighters and volunteers who protect us.  We appreciate what they do, and we miss those we miss, but they'll never be forgotten," said John Loftus, co-chair of the tournament.

The tournament was held in honor of several fallen Owego firefighters, including Captain Matthew Porcari, who passed away January 21 while battling a blaze.

And other golfers teed off at Endwell Greens Saturday.  It was the 36th Annual Fox 40/ My 8/ Court Jester Invitational.  It's a two day event, continuing Sunday.  There will be a winner each day.  And proceeds from a raffle will go to charity.
